1) %W/W (mass or weight percent) :-

The weight percent is defined as the ratio of weight of the solute to total weight of solution.

– %W/W =Weight of Solute

                 ———————— × 100 %

            Total Weight of Solution

symbol :- %W/W

– Unit : No unit

——————————————————–

2) %V/V (volume percent) :-

– It is define as ratio of volume of the Solute to total volume of solution.

– %V/V = volume of Solute

             ————————–   × 100 %

         Total Volume of Solution

— symbol :- %V/V

– Unit : No unit

——————————————————–

3) %W/V (weight by volume percent) :-

– It is expressed in ratio of weight of the Solute which is stay in solution to total volume of Solution.

– %W/V   = Weight of solute

                 ———————— × 100 %

              Total Volume of Solution

— symbol :- %W/V

– Unit : No unit

4) Normality(N) :-

– It is defined as the number of gram equivalents of solute dissolved in one litre of solution.

– Normality (N)

N = Gram equivalent of solute

      –————————————

  Volume of Solution in litre

– Equivalent weight of Solute

      = Atomic weight of Solute

        ————————————

                Valency of Solute

– For example, for H2SO4

=  96/2

= 49

Valency of  H2SO(H+2 SO4-2) = 2

– Gram equivalent of solute

    =   weight of solute in gram

        —————————————

       Equivalent weight of Solute

— symbol :- N

– Unit : :

SI unit- mole/equivalent or N

CGS unit :- mole/gramme

5) Molarity(M) :-

– It is defined as the number of gram moles of the solute dissolved in one litre of solution.

– Molarity (M)

M =   Moles of solute

           –—————————–

           Volume of Solution in litre

— symbol :- M

– Unit :

SI unit :- mole/litre or M

MKS unit :- mol/dm-3

6) Molality :-

– It is defined as the number of gram moles of the solute dissolved in one litre of solution.

– Molality (m)

m =     Moles of solute

             –—————————–——

            Volume of Solution in litre

— symbol :- m

– Unit :

SI unit :- mole/kilogramme or m

CGS unit :- mole/gramme

7) Formality :-

It is defined as the number of formula mass of any solute dissolved in 1 litter of solution.

F= Number of formula weight of

Solute

      –—————————–——

         Volume of Solution in litre

— symbol :- F

– Unit :

SI unit :- mole/m³ or F or mole

CGS unit :N/A

——————————————————–

8) Mole fraction:-

– It is defined as  the ratio of moles of individual components to the total moles of the system.

– If Solution contain components A and B then mole fraction of component A is :

– Mole fraction of compo. A (XA)

XA  =   Moles of A

              ––————————

       Moles of A + Moles of B

X  = Moles of solute

              ––————————

       Total moles of solution

symbol :- X

– Unit : No unit

——————————————————–

9) Mass fraction:-

– It is defined as  the ratio of mass of individual components to the total mass of the system.

– If Solution contain components A and B then mole fraction of component A is :

– Mass fraction of compo. A (MA)

MA  =   Mass of A

              ––—————————

       Total mass of system

M  = Mass of solute

              ––————————

       Total mass of solution

symbol :- M

– Unit : No unit

——————————————————–

10) Mole percent :-

– It is expressed in percentage of mole fraction.

– Mole percent of A

XA% = Moles of A

              ––———————— × 100%

       Moles of A + Moles of B

— symbol :- X%

– Unit : No unit
